Asociația Banca Pentru Alimente Maramureș is a Romanian social enterprise that addresses food waste through the collection of products with a short expiration date. Their partnership with Evosted, a company offering educational and sustainable living services in an educational centre, aims to raise awareness about the environmental impacts of food waste.
Events, meetings and workshops were organised in Evosted's centre to promote local urban composting activities, facilitating the selective collection of vegetable waste from households, restaurants, and schools.
The partnership engaged 70 families actively contributing vegetable waste to designated composting areas, with additional households setting up composting systems at home. In a year, the initiative collected 5 tonnes of vegetable waste, avoiding 9.81 tonnes of CO2 emissions, equivalent to removing 25 cars from the road. The project successfully decreased soil and water pollution while fostering environmental awareness in the community.
“This partnership model can be replicated in other areas and with additional partners, provided that the team is unified and common objectives and implementation rules are established. Its success is primarily due to the shared vision and desire to increase the level of awareness in reducing food waste and the natural composting process. Having a common vision, we met and laid the foundations of the project, each contributing with all the know-how.”
