The Social Cooperative Sirio was created 1986, inspired by the lay saint Mario Tommasini. The aim of this cooperative is to offer work opportunities to prisoners, with the first project being the "Cittadella project" of 1988, which provided work opportunities to 24 inmates from San Francesco. It was the first time that the prison opened up to the city. Today the social cooperative has 152 employees, 128 of whom are partners. The organisation provides a number of services, including household waste collection, a second-hand store, and a furniture restoration workshop.
